Baked Goods for Good
Do you remember the childhood joy of a bake sale? With a few quarters or dollars in hand, the possibilities were endless — you could pick a cookie or a cupcake (or maybe both?) to savor. The excitement in the air was palpable. The sweet treats were abundant. Your day was made.
Bakers Uprising, a local collective of home and professional bakers looking to make a difference, has brought that sugary day of joy back to Lancaster — for an excellent cause.
On Sunday, October 23, 2022, join a cohort of local bakers for the third annual Bakers Uprising Bake Sale, with all proceeds to benefit the Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County, a program of the Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County.
CAP’s Domestic Violence Services work as, “a catalyst to eliminate domestic violence through direct service, advocacy, and social change. Over the past forty-three years, 75,593 survivors of abuse have received 379,513 nights of shelter and 572,050 hours of counseling, among other supportive services,” according to their website.
“Bakers Uprising started in Summer 2020 as part of a worldwide event called Bakers Against Racism, started by Paola Velez,” shared Kristen Richards-Sollenberger, owner of Front Porch Baking Co., event organizer, and self-proclaimed bake sale lover. “Myself and five other local home and professional bakers came together to bake for Crispus Attucks Community Center in Lancaster. We each created an item and pre-sold boxes that folks could pick up safely and outdoors from us that summer. Square One hosted us and it was a great day!”
After a successful first event — even during the uncertain and unprecedented first year of the Covid-19 pandemic — the Bakers Uprising organizers wanted to continue their work and turn the bake sale into an annual event.
“After that, we all wanted to keep the momentum going. We connected with Community Action Partnership to then start our (now) annual bake sale for Domestic Violence Services,” Richards-Sollenberger explained. “Our first sale for DVS sold out in 45 minutes! It was wild.”
This year, local bakers will gather in Musser Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or while supplies last!) to sell some delicious treats. Vegan and gluten-free options will be available. Pet-friendly treats will also be available for purchase at this year’s event. Each item will cost a flat fee of $5.
“This will be our third annual bake sale in support of DVS. The name Bakers Uprising came about when we did our second bake sale and got a little more involved with CAP. So many bakers started reaching out and wanting to join in to help our community,” Richards-Sollenberger shared. “I thought creating a name for the group gave everyone equal identity no matter who was participating. I really wanted to make sure home bakers could feel a sense of pride by being able to say they are a part of this collective.”
